Blue October были сформированы в 1995 в городе Хьюстон, штат Техас, певцом/писателем/гитаристом Justin Furstenfeld, его братом, Jeremy, и Ryan Delahoussaye (скрипка). Позже к ним присоединился гитарист/вокалист C.B. Hudson и бассист Matt Noveskey. Взять название Blue October группу побудило кратковременное пребывание Джастина в госпитале в октябре.
